The topography was challenging, given the sloping site and the requirement for a large footprint level access building. We worked hard with the architect and landscape architect to optimise the levels, and successfully achieved an earthworks balance avoiding unsustainable and costly export of material to landfill. This was a major factor in the viability of the project.
The new building provides flexible teaching accommodation arranged around a landscaped courtyard, as well as a nursery, gym, assembly hall, dining hall, kitchen and associated administration and storage spaces. In addition, the school incorporates an Additional Support Needs (ASN) base. Externally, the school benefits from the large, landscaped courtyard, MUGA pitch and extensive playground.
The structure comprises of a braced steel frame, which provides the open plan, flexible space required, whilst an exposed glulam structure provides an attractive architectural aesthetic to the main entrance elevation, courtyard and social spaces.
