Bilston Primary School & Gore Glen Primary School, Midlothian
The Scottish Government predicts that Midlothian will be the fastest growing area in Scotland over the next quarter of a century. As part of their strategy to expand their school's estate, Midlothian Council invested in two new primary schools to serve growing communities in Bilston and Gorebridge. These projects created modern, sustainable education facilities for over 750 pupils.
Benefiting from views over the Pentland Hills, Gore Glen Primary School is situated on a steeply sloping site immediately adjacent to the A7, west of the village of Gorebridge. The new school provides facilities for up to 558 pupils and is split over two levels in response to the site topography. Bulk earthworks were required in order to create level building platforms, and Woolgar Hunter undertook earthworks modelling in order to optimise the cut/fill quantities. In order to minimise the offsite disposal of soils, soil modification was undertaken, allowing the re-use of site won material as fill.
The timber framed building which was delivered on time and within budget achieved an EPC “A” rating and is rated BREEAM “Very Good”.
Bilston Primary School replaced ageing facilities with a new single-storey eight-classroom school with nursery, which accommodates up to 200 pupils. A multi-use games area, car park and sports pitch with floodlights were also constructed and the new facilities will benefit not only pupils and staff but also the wider community.
