This Care Home sits in a prominent position on a remediated site in the Newton Mearns area of Glasgow. The 90 bed care home constructed from a combination of traditional methods and timber framed construction, is embedded into the sloping side with feature landscaping.
The design proposals for the building were largely dictated by the sloping site topography and relatively shallow presence of rock, informing a dual floor levelled building. The building is predominantly single storey in nature, being of timber framed construction with the lower portion of the site accommodating a 2 storey element, being of traditional masonry construction with a precast concrete floor. Retaining wall structures were introduced around the front of the site to deal with the dramatic changes in level, allowing a prominent elevated position for the building to be realised.
Some site remediation enabling works were required, with foundations being a combination of trench fill and strip foundations bearing directly onto the rock. The drainage involved a sustainable urban drainage system, with grey water harvesting utilised for reducing the buildings water demands. An element of rock cut was required to install deep elements of the drainage, with the resulting rock re-used as fill beneath roads paved areas.
