Morrisons Supermarkets

Woolgar Hunter were engaged by Morrsions Supermarkets to provide engineering design on a major store roll out across Scotland. We were involved in the newbuild superstores at Auchinlea, on the east of Glasgow City Centre, and in Dundee.

The project at Auchinlea, involved the design and construction of a 80,000ft2 supermarket and supplementary 50,000ft2 retail unit for 3rd party lease, along with associated car parking , Petrol Filling Station and landscaping.

The site itself presented engineering challenges as it was a former landfill site, requiring improvement and remediation. The landfill required dynamic compaction and the site had particular drainage problems which were overcome by utilising ground infiltration.
The building superstructure is a steel portalised frame, designed to provide the strict requirements in terms of aisle layout within the store, while being highly efficient in terms of steelwork tonnage and cost.

We subsequently designed a further new build store in Dundee, adjacent to the A90 on the northern edge of the City. The project had a similar brief albeit the building design varied to suit the site location.

There were significant Civil Engineering works required to enable the site, including new roadwork and junction formation on the A90, and SuDS systems to manage the surface water drainage.
