Douglas Primary School, South Lanarkshire
Woolgar Hunter provided the Civil and Structural Engineering design for the construction of the new Douglas Primary School, as part of South Lanarkshire Council's schools programme.
The development includes an outdoor sports pitch, new playgrounds and associated roads and car parking. The site is slopes steeply to the rear and therefore a detailed cut/fill analysis was undertaken to balance material for re-use and identify retaining structure requirements.
The building superstructure was constructed using timber, as a cost effective and sustainable, low carbon solution to the low rise structure. Bespoke 'compound' structural timber sections were developed to create the large floor to ceiling height for the gym hall space and clear roof span.
A co-ordinated demolition took place, as the new school was constructed in tandem with the existing school, which allowed a safe and phased occupation from the existing to new building.
