New Science & Technology Building, Glasgow Academy
The requirement for a new Science and Technology Building to replace the current facilities, offered Page & Park Architects the opportunity to provide Glasgow Academy with a worthy winner of the ‘Best Building in Scotland prize for 2016’.
The Glasgow Academy is the oldest fully independent school in Glasgow and as part of their aim for continued academic success, the school commissioned a new Science and Technology Building to replace facilities, which were spread across the campus. The new building is located on a site which was occupied by existing dilapidated tenement properties. As part of our role of civil and structural engineers, we continually monitored and structurally evaluated the existing buildings over a period of two years until planning permission was achieved.
Poor ground blighted the previous buildings, and we designed a piled substructure with a concrete frame superstructure to allow for future flexibility within the laboratories and teaching spaces. The building is supplemented with an inclined auditorium on the ground floor/ part basement which can be used by the school and outside organisations alike.
