A dedicated training complex was first proposed for Rangers FC by the then manager Dick Advocat, upon his arrival at the club in June 1998. As such it was one of the first of its kind in Scotland.
The brief involved creating ‘state of the art’ training facilities for the Rangers Football Club’s first team and their Youth Academy. The site identified was at Auchenhowie, on the outskirts of Glasgow.
The development includes a major pavilion building which houses a full size indoor pitch, together with changing rooms, teaching rooms, gym, hydrotherapy pool and recreational areas for the players and staff. The building also houses staff offices and a press room.
The architectural aesthetic made extensive use of timber, and glulam structural timbers were utilised in much of the roof structure and within the 2 storey feature ’hub’ in the centre of the accommodation. The clear span required within the main hall was achieved by long span steel ‘spine’ trusses spanning ‘end to end’, with cellform rafters forming the curved barrel roof. Solid timber decking formed the roof surface and provides rigidity to the roof structure.
The building is, of course, only a part of the centre, and externally, a series of pitches ranging from professional standard to practice pitches were formed; both grass and artificial surface.
Key to the success of grass pitches is good drainage and good irrigation. Woolgar Hunter combined these requirements within a truly sustainable drainage solution for the site. The drainage system carries the surface water run o from the site to a detention pond at the low point of the site. The water is stored with any excess discharging to the local watercourse via a flow control. The stored water is then recycled for pitch irrigation purposes and to maximise the use of fertilisers that have been placed in the soil.
Recently we have been commissioned to design a small stand and changing facility for the youth teams, adjacent to the youth training pitch. This will allow dedicated facilities for the development of young players.
