Sports Facilities, Craigholme School
Craigholme School is a leading private Girls school located in the south side of Glasgow. Sports play a large part in the curriculum of the school, and it was recognised that the pre-existing facilities on Haggs Road were dated and in need of improvement.
As a result SMC Davis Duncan Architects were commissioned to design a new Sports Pavilion on the site, with Woolgar Hunter appointed as Civil and Structural Engineers.
The scope of the project brief involved the demolition of the existing small sports pavilion, prior to the development of a new stand-alone sports complex. The building houses a large sports hall con gurable to hockey, netball, badminton, basketball, tennis and volleyball. It also accommodates an indoor climbing wall, dance studio. There is also an all weather oodlit synthetic pitch adjacent to the new pavilion.
The design developed by the architect is a dynamic curved roof pro le ‘wrapping’ the internal court. The desire was to create the building using timber.
Our structural solution involves a series of glulam timber exposed ‘ribs’ that spring from the rear of the building and then project over the front to form a canopy. A series of raking steel props support the leading edge. The vertical building elevations are also timber clad.
The resulting building provides an inspirational space, in keeping with its parkland surroundings, that was successfully constructed on a tight budget.
