Stirling Sports, University of Stirling
Woolgar Hunter was employed by the University of Stirling, Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence including its elite performance programme, home to a number of Olympians to create a new iconic building for their sports campus, alongside FaulknerBrowns Architects.
The brief aimed to expand and unite the existing sports facilities into a coherent plan. The completed development includes both extension & refurbishment of the existing sports facilities, along with an architecturally striking newbuild, steel and concrete framed 'glass box' feature building. The newbuild element houses reception, changing facilities, strength and conditioning and large gym, fitness studios, cafe and administration offices. Alongside this building is a new 3 court sports hall and elite athlete performance facility.
The building structure utilised an inventive hybrid of reinforced concrete and steel framed construction. The core of the new building is a reinforced concrete plinth forming the ground to first floor and a second floor circular 'tabletop' and roof support fins. Around this was built a steel framed superstructure and cantilevering roof structure. Prefabricated tripod steel frames; our 'cricket wickets', provided the support to the triple height glazed elevations.
The entire development was undertaken whilst keeping the sports facilities operational. As such, an enabling works contract was required to provide temporary changing facilities and gym, as well as new temporary road access and service diversions.
